Understanding Everything about Door Handles

Knowing something about the different types of door handles will help you to make an educated choice if you intend buying some. They are available in two distinct types – the lever-type handles and the knob-type handles. To make it easy for you to choose the right ones for your home or office, here are is an explanation about the different types.

#1: The back-plate lever type door handles

These are the most commonly used door handles because they can be used in homes, public establishments, as well as commercial establishments. They are available in many styles and finishes like chromium plates, steel finish, brass, etc. These come in two varieties:

  • Standard lever door handles – these are used where locking the door is not necessary. The door handles are fitted to a tube-shaped latch which shuts the door. Just by pushing the lever down the door can be opened.
  • Lever lock door handles – these are required in places where the doors need to be locked for security reasons. A Mortice lock is fitted along with the door handle. The door can be shut in the same way as the standard lever door handles. The difference is that it can also be locked with a key.

#2: Lever snib door handles

These are specially designed for bathroom or WCs where you need to lock the door from the inside. These are slightly different from the lever lock door handles because they can be locked from the inside by turning the snib. And in an emergency when the door is jammed, the doors can be opened by using a screwdriver or coin even if the snib is turned in the locked position.

#3: Lever on rose door handles

These are the latest trend in handles and many different designs and styles are available online. Finishes like stainless steel, chromium-plated, polished brass, polished nickel, etc. are available in modernistic designs. For those who like antique designs, these door handles are also available in polished brass or polished bronze finishes. These are a little tricky to fix and should be done by professionals so that neither the aesthetics nor your safety is compromised.

#4: Mortice knob-type door handles

If you prefer to use the knob-type door handles instead of the lever-types, then the Mortice one is the best choice. They have two back plates that are fixed on each side of the door. These plates are connected with 8mm spindle and a pair of knobs that are fixed on either side of the door in proper alignment with each other.

#5: Rim-knob type door handles

For the internal doors of an establishment, whether residential, public, commercial, the rim-knob type door handles are most suitable. The handles are used in conjunction with rim locks. The knobs are secured in place with a grub screw. It keeps the knobs in place so that the spindle work in perfect alignment with the internal and external knobs. A keyhole has to be designed while fixing this type of handle so that you can lock the door when necessary.

When choosing a door handle, consider the style of the door, the level of security needed, and the overall aesthetic of the room. It is important to ensure that the handle you choose fits the size and thickness of the door and that it is properly installed for safety and security reasons. Door handles can be made from various materials such as metal, plastic, and wood, and are available in a wide range of finishes such as chrome, brass, or matte black.
